Imagen de muestra Where is Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu?

It is difficult to understand you option to get into Machu Picchu (Train, trek or walk through the train rails) if you don’t understand where everything is located. Below some important information to understand the geography of the area:

Where everything is: Machu Picchu is 130 km away from Cusco. Cusco is 10 or 20 kilometers west away from of the Urubamba River. This river forms the Urubamba Valley also known since the Inca times as the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Coming from Cusco to the valley, if you keep going north you will eventually hit the town Aguas Calientes. This town is a small village located on the right margin of river Urubamba just below Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu (Old Mountain in Quechua) is the name of mountain in which the citadel is located. Wayna Picchu (New Mountain in Quechua) is the name of mountain in the back of Machu Picchu Citadel. (If you check the typical picture of Machu Picchu you should identify it, given it is the mountain in the back of the citadel) ·

Where the Inca Trail is: There are plenty of Inca Trails along the Andes. The most famous one is the one that composes the 4-day trek into Machu Picchu. If you take a bus or a private remise from Cusco until km 82 or 88 of Urubamba River you will reach the starting point of the Inca Trail. From there you will cross the river and get into the mountains, the Inca Trail will follow a parallel path of the Urubamba river and finally rich the lost citadel through the mountains and getting the first sight into it with the impressive typical view of the citadel.
